Ypres added to Junior WRC calendar

Renties Ypres Rally Belgium (19 – 22 November) has been added to this season’s FIA Junior WRC Championship as the potentially decisive final round.

The tricky asphalt fixture was confirmed in the series on Wednesday (30 September) after being added to the FIA World Rally Championship schedule for the first time in August.

The Belgian classic, which has been running for 55 years, will provide a tough finale for the WRC’s young hotshots. Unpredictable weather will add to the challenge of almost 290km of sealed surface action over three days.

Narrow farm lanes, lined by drainage ditches, will offer little room for error while Sunday’s final leg will be focused on the iconic Spa-Francorchamps race circuit.

Points scored in Ypres will be multiplied by 1.5 for drivers who have competed in at least two of the first three rounds. It will ensure a pulsating finale to the series, which features the WRC’s young stars in identical Pirelli shod, M-Sport Poland-built Ford Fiesta Rally4 cars.

Junior WRC team director Maciej Woda said the addition of Ypres meant just one round would be lost from the original schedule of five due to the impact of Covid-19.

“The FIA Junior WRC Championship always promises to take the future stars of WRC to some of the most iconic rallies on the calendar and an opportunity to sample every type of surface on the WRC calendar,” he added.

“Renties Ypres Rally Belgium is a very, very special rally that has retained much of its character over the years and watching our crews navigate the tight and technical roads throughout West Flanders will be an exciting prospect.”

After rounds in Sweden and Estonia, the penultimate fixture takes place at Rally Italia Sardegna (8 – 11 October). Latvia’s Martins Sesks heads the standings by eight points from Finn Sami Pajari.
