Tom Kristensson cruises to emphatic victory

Tom Kristensson was in a league of his own as he led from start to finish in the FIA Junior WRC at Rally Italia Sardegna.

The Swede, driving a Ford Fiesta Rally4, claimed an early advantage on Friday morning before blasting clear of his rivals as taxing conditions ravaged the field.

After 16 gruelling stages, Kristensson finished 11min25.4sec ahead of Paraguayan youngster Fabrizio Zaldivar.

“We started very good, actually we started on a really high pace and went slower or safer from there! I’m not 100% focused on the championship still, I will focus on the next rally and push for a victory like this weekend,” he said.

Martins Sesks was 18min30.8sec behind Zaldivar in third. The 21-year-old broke a driveshaft on Friday, but could take solace in the fact he claimed six stage wins throughout the event. Enrico Oldrati was 7min04.9sec behind in fourth.

Sami Pajari was another man to hit driveshaft problems and took an early bath on Saturday morning. He restarted in classy style on Sunday to snatch a clean sweep of stage victories en route to fifth. Marco Pollara rounded out the field in sixth, 1hr16min50.4sec back from the winner.

Ruairi Bell was the only casualty of the day. The young Brit was on course to finish fourth, but his Fiesta stopped in Sunday’s final Sassari – Argentiera speed test.
