Even a navigational mistake near the end of the special failed to stop the Aussie from taking his 13th career Dakar stage win and moving into the overall lead.
“It’s just the first stage, so today [was] quite difficult with the navigation. I got lost a little bit about 7 kilometres from the finish. I took a little bit of time just trying to get back on track here. It’s been a good, clean day for us. I think you’re gonna see a lot of chopping and changing in the standings in this race. You just gotta stay calm and let it cruise along and make it work.”
