Petter Solberg and Andreas Mikkelsen to debut Pirelli’s WRC tyres

Former world champion Petter Solberg will return to WRC action at Rally Italia Sardegna (8 – 11 October) when Pirelli debuts the tyre to be used in next year’s FIA World Rally Championship.

The Norwegian will drive a Pirelli-liveried Citroën C3 World Rally Car in the spectacular rally-closing Wolf Power Stage in Sardinia. The car will be fitted with Pirelli’s latest-generation Scorpion KX tyres.

Solberg, who won the 2003 world title with the Italian company and won Sardinia’s inaugural WRC event in 2004, will be co-driven through the 6.89km Sassari – Argentiera test on Sunday lunchtime by Pirelli development driver Andreas Mikkelsen.

The duo will be first into the gravel stage, showcasing the new tyre before the competitive action begins.

Mikkelsen will debut the Scorpion KX tyre in public three days earlier at the rally’s Olmedo shakedown test on Thursday morning. He will give passenger rides through the 3.79km stage to selected journalists to demonstrate the capabilities of the tyre on rough gravel.

Pirelli’s rally activity manager, Terenzio Testoni, said: “Obviously this isn’t a serious competition debut. We just wanted to take the chance to show the new Pirelli Scorpion KX tyre at our home event to media and fans.

“It’s great to see Petter back with us for the Wolf Power Stage – but maybe less fun for Andreas in the co-driver’s seat!”

Pirelli will supply all cars in the headline World Rally Car category and support championships from January 2021 until the end of 2024.
