Big drama for Ott Tänak at Rally Turkey in what could prove a defining moment in his bid to defend his world title.
The Estonian was setting a fierce pace through Saturday morning’s opening Yeşilbelde test – a rough, tough and dusty monster at 31.79km. With just under 6km to the finish, his Hyundai i20 speared off the road and into the bushes on a short straight. Tänak and co-driver Martin Järveoja were quickly out of the car to inspect what appeared to be a mechanical problem but there was nothing that could be done. Their day was over – and it was a massive blow to Tänak’s title defence.
