Max Verstappen: We have a decent top speed

Max Verstappen produced a superb final qualifying lap on Saturday to seal Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s first pole position of 2020 in the final race of the season.

Max Verstappen saw world champion Lewis Hamilton and then Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas go fastest, however he posted a time of 1min35.246s to pip the Finn by +0.025s and become the first driver other than Mercedes to secure pole at Yas Marina since 2013.

The 23-year-old said: “Very happy with that. It was quite tricky qualifying at the beginning, especially the last sector – there are so many corners where you can make a mistake. Luckily everything came together in that final lap. We will try to do our best and try to keep them (Mercedes) behind. It seems like we have a decent top speed this weekend.”

Teammate Alex Albon qualified fifth, while Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda duo Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly will start seventh and ninth respectively on Sunday.
