Alexey Lukynuk does the ERC title double

Date:

Alexey Lukynuk is the winner of the 2020 FIA European Rally Championship, the Russian’s second title in three years and the first for the Saintéloc Junior Team*.

After missing out on the 2019 title in a final-stage decider on Rally Hungary, Lukyanuk made sure of a second crown on Rally Islas Canarias this afternoon at the wheel of a Pirelli-equipped Citroën C3 R5, with co-driver Alexey Arnautov by his side.

“I’m disappointed by my performance today, it could be much better,” said Lukyanuk, who was co-driven by Dmitry Eremeev on the first four rounds of the season. “I did two mistakes but it was a very tough rally. We tried to control the gap between us and [Oliver] Solberg. To be honest I’ve been anxiously waiting for this moment to end this fight in any way, to win or lose doesn’t matter because there were so many pressures behind during the season and now I need to breath in and relax and see the things around me.”

Although he wasn’t able to prevent Lukyanuk from claiming the overall title, Oliver Solberg has won the ERC1 Junior Championship driving a Pirelli-equipped Volkswagen Polo GTI R5*.

Meanwhile, Adrien Fourmaux marked his Rally Islas Canarias debut by winning the event in a Michelin-equipped Ford Fiesta R5 MkII. He beat fellow Frenchman Yoann Bonato by 25s with Iván Ares third in a Hyundai i20 R5.
